USAREC Brigade Commander to Speak at Mines

Colonel Eric Lopez, the United States Recruiting Command 3rd Brigade Commander, speaks on campus from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday December 04, 2018, in Classroom Building, Room 204.

 

The Department of Military Science at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will host special guest speaker Colonel Eric Lopez from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 04, 2018, in Classroom Building, Room 204 on the Mines Campus (map here).

COL Lopez is a graduate of the United States Military Academy West Point, a seasoned combat veteran, and the Commander of the 3rd Brigade United States Army Recruiting Command. Lopez will share his insight on what it means to be a leader and how to prepare for leadership roles after university, with the students and cadets of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.  Following Lopez’s remarks the forum will be open to a question and answer session.  This event is free and open to all students and the public.

Lopez and his wife Christy have two children, Ryan (18) and Nathan (16). The family is very involved in church, and they like to take “family adventures” getting to know the area where they are stationed. Lopez graduated from West Point in 1996. He is an infantry officer, and he served in the 101st Airborne Division, 75th Ranger Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, 2nd Infantry Division, and 1st Infantry Division.  He served seven combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan including commanding a company and a battalion in Afghanistan and serving as a battalion and brigade operations officer in Iraq. Lopez has a bachelor’s degree in history from the United States Military Academy, and master’s degree in military studies from Marine Corps University. He has the awards and decorations commensurate with his rank. He earned four Bronze Star Medals during his combat deployments, and he was the honor graduate of Ranger School and Jumpmaster School. Lopez enjoys spending time with his family, communicating and keeping in touch with soldiers and families on social media, hunting, fishing, and playing golf.

The SD Mines Military Science Department’s Leadership Form Series, is a learning forum that provides students preparing to lead the future of America at the local, state, and federal level, the opportunity to hear from, and interact with, current and recognized business, political, military, and organizational leaders.
