Strategic Research Area: Materials and Manufacturing

This research area includes the basic science of materials, applied sciences related to materials, and advanced manufacturing technologies related to both military and civilian applications. Included are electromagnetic, energetic, and bio-materials as well as advanced composites and nanomaterials used in regular and novel devices. This research area extends from mathematical modeling of fundamental processes to advanced manufacturing technologies.

Advanced Materials and Materials Processing

Research in advanced materials and materials processing is concerned with fundamental scientific questions related to a wide variety of new materials and with the development of an understanding of how to utilize these materials in various applications. Research under this theme has five areas of emphasis: 

  • Photovoltaics
  • Biomaterials and Bioengineering
  • Transportation Materials and Engineering
  • Human Protective Materials
  • Energetic Materials

Advanced Manufacturing Theme

Advanced Manufacturing focuses on modeling and experimental testing of materials and on the development and end-use application of a given technology. Research emphases under this theme include: 

  • Efficient and Environmentally-Sensitive Machining and Fabrication
  • Controls, Sensors and Autonomous Robotic Systems
  • Advanced Manufacturing Technologies for Materials Development.
