The Expanding Universe:  The universe is big and it’s getting even bigger!  Throughout history, we have repeatedly underestimated the size of the universe.  This talk will focus on the current understanding of Hubble’s Law and the Hubble constant, which measures the expansion rate of the universe where velocity increases with increasing distance from the observer.  It appears that dark energy causes space to “stretch.”  This interesting, recent discovery results in galaxies that are beyond a certain distance from Earth to move away from us faster than the speed of light, making much of the universe forever beyond our observation.  The talk discusses how this is possible in light of Einstein’s theories of Special and General Relativity.
