These organizations recognize SD Mines’ commitment to providing quality educational opportunities to America's veterans and military-connected students.

“Our veteran and active military students are a true asset to our campus and it’s an honor to serve them. It was clear from the time I started here at SD Mines that this university, from the top down, cared for our veteran students and it shows as we continually strive to provide the resources and support our vets need to be successful. We are thrilled to be recognized for that commitment,” says Derek Flom, the coordinator of the Veterans Resource Center at Mines and an Air Force veteran.

Consistently ranked as a military friendly institution, SD Mines currently enrolls 135 veteran or active duty students. The university offers a comprehensive Veterans Resource Center where students can study and receive tutoring and scholarship assistance, as well as help with resumes, cover letters and academic and life skills.

The organization College Factual takes a more in-depth look at separate degree programs that are best for veterans. SD Mines achieved top scores in three categories: chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering. SD Mines geology and geological engineering program ranked in the top 15% in the United States for veterans.

The SD Mines Veterans Club is also hosting its annual chili cookoff on Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. Part of the proceeds benefit charity. SD Mines is honoring veterans and active duty students and staff with a Veterans Day Salute on Friday, Nov. 8. This year’s speaker is Larry Zimmerman, former South Dakota Secretary of Veteran Affairs and also a former State Command Sergeant Major of the National Guard. Additionally, SD Mines is running a care package drive for three deployed students.
