RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines
student-athlete Hillary Hawkins is having a phenomenal senior season for the
Lady Hardrocker women's basketball team and continues to leave a lasting
impression on the program.
After this past weekend's road trip to Arizona,
Hawkins, who had already became the all-time leader in three-point goals earlier
this season, added to her total and set a few more records in the process.
So far this season, the Elizabeth, Colo., native has connected on 31 baskets
from downtown bringing her total to 178 in her career as a Hardrocker. The
previous record was held by Ann (Konechne) Traphagen who had the mark with 153
SD Mines played Arizona Christian University Friday and
Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz., where the Lady Hardrockers came away with two wins.
In Saturday's contest, SD Mines defeated the Firestorm, 105-70.
A lot of
the credit for the 'W' went to Hawkins who connected on 10-20 three-point goals
in the game which set two new records --- most three-point goals made in a
single game and most three-pointers attempted in a single game.
hit a couple early in the game so we kept running sets to get her the ball,"
Lady Hardrocker women's head coach Barb Felderman said. "She got hot and
(Arizona Christian) couldn't figure out how to defend her."
currently the second leading scorer for the Hardrockers this season. She is
averaging 13.8 points per game and has tallied 166 markers so far this year. She
breached the 1,000-point mark earlier this season and has a career total of
1,201 points thus far which puts her at 14th all-time in scoring for
the Lady Hardrockers.
"I went on a recruiting trip to Colorado to see
Hillary. I took her to breakfast and it turned out to be one of the best I've
ever had," Felderman said. "Hillary is an atypical SD Mines student-athlete. She
excels on the court and in the classroom --- and does it with a smile on her
face all the time."
With 14 games left in the season, Hawkins is on pace
for almost 400 points this season which would also elevate her in the all-time
standings (Top 10).
No matter how the rest of the season plays out,
Hawkins has carved her name in the Lady Hardrocker record books. Now it's just a
matter of waiting to see how high and how often.
