SD Mines WiSE Program Invites Girls to STEMinist Night

RAPID CITY, SD (Sept. 25, 2018) – The South Dakota School of Mines & TechnologyWomen in Science & Engineering (WiSE) program invites girls in grades three through eight to explore science, meet female scientists and enjoy an SD Mines volleyball game during STEMinist Night on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the King Center.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The word STEMinist is a catch phrase used to advocate for equal representation of women in these fields.

The event, sponsored by WiSE, the SD Mines Culture & Attitude program and SD Mines Athletics, will begin at 4:30 p.m. with science and engineering activities, including making ice cream freeze and dry ice smoke. Science activities will be organized and run by WiSE mentors and Culture and Attitude scholars. Girls will enjoy free food before attending the 6 p.m. matchup between Black Hills State University and SD Mines’ volleyball teams.

Lisa Carlson, Student Success Director, said STEMinist Night is a great opportunity for girls to enjoy science and engineering activities and connect with STEMinist role models. “Showcasing women in STEM as role models is a powerful paradigm shift for girls who don’t think they look like a computer scientist, geologist or mechanical engineer,” she says. “This is a great opportunity to connect girls in our community to the great role models we have right here on campus and have a little fun while we’re at it.”
