Student Research Symposium

The School of Mines and Technology will hold the 6th annual Research Symposium on Tuesday, March 31, 2014.  This important Symposium will be sponsored by the Office of Research Affairs.  Cash prizes will be provided (see below).

The Research Symposium is open to all graduates and undergraduates. Separate prizes will be awarded to graduates and undergraduates. Students may apply to give either an oral presentation using PowerPoint slides or a poster presentation, but not both. The subject of the research presentation is left entirely to the individual. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, reports on ongoing or completed research or design projects, or reviews of recent advances in some branch of engineering, science and mathematics, or humanities and social sciences.

In order to participate, students must submit an abstract online using the form available at  http://interact.sdsmt.edu/research/presentation-proposal.htm  by February 27, 2015.  Oral presentation times will be limited to 20 minutes. This will include set-up, presentation, and a short question and answer period. Audio-visual equipment will be available.  Poster presentation size is 34 inches by 44 inches or smaller.  The poster boards will be provided in the Office of Research Affairs (OH-102). Students should pick up the poster board no later than Thursday, March 26 and bring the mounted presentation to the Surbeck Center at registration time. Students will present their poster to judges and others who attend the poster session.

Accepted abstracts will be printed in an Abstract Booklet.  The order of presentations will be assigned after all abstracts have been received.  Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in both oral and poster categories to graduates and undergraduates.  In addition, an award will be presented to the overall best presentation.

1st Prize - $500  -  2nd Prize - $300  -  3rd Prize - $200

Overall Best Paper - $500

In the case of multiple authors, the prize will be awarded to the author who presents the paper. If students have questions regarding research projects for the symposium, they should check with their department head or chair.
