A paid two-week internship experience for high school students-—an opportunity to participate in cutting edge research in Metallurgical and Ceramic Engineering.

Enrollment Process
All prospective campers must complete the following items before their application will be complete.
- Submit the online registration including a one-page essay that expresses interest in conducting research related to Metallurgical Engineering or Ceramic Engineering
- Submit unofficial high school transcripts
- Submit resume
- Submit one letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher
- If the number of candidates exceeds the positions available, students might be asked for an interview prior to final selection.
- Submit waivers

Internship Details
Eligibility: Candidates should be entering their Soph, Jr or Sr year of high school
Location: Research will be performed on the South Dakota Mines campus during normal working hours. Researchers are responsible for transport to and from campus each day
Number: Up to 10 scholars will be selected for a two-week summer internship (summer 2026)
Mentoring: Scholars will engage with a dedicated faculty mentor and will be paired with a National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduate researcher
Research Areas (others possible): Advanced Alloy Processing, Welding and Joining, Corrosion Engineering, Critical Minerals, Biomaterials, Archaeometallurgy, Protective Ceramic Coatings, Ceramic 3D Printing, Processing of Indigenous Minerals, Glaze Formulation
Stipend: Scholars will receive a $500 stipend for the two-week experience
