Field Experiences and Internships
Field experience is essential for entry into many professional programs. Medical and dental schools recommend “shadowing” professionals in their workplaces to gain a better understanding of the day-to-day demands in their fields. Some programs, such as
physical and occupational therapy, require documentation of “observation hours”—learning from professionals in action. Learn more about these expectations from the websites of the professional programs that interest you. Then start accumulating field
experiences as early as your freshman year and continue to shadow and observe throughout your time at South Dakota Mines. Work with your advisor to complete a Field Experience Form prior to shadowing or observing.
Internships are also a great way to gain career experience. Students in the health sciences can set up internships with health agencies such as the hospice house and assisted living centers. Atmospheric science students work side by side with researchers
in the Science Career Experience Program. Many police departments offer summer internships for students who want a career in law enforcement. Talk with your advisor and the Career Center about other possibilities for internships. Students secure their
own internships. To earn academic credit, complete an Internship Form before the internship starts.
