Brief Bio
Richard Burgess is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at the South Dakota
School of Mines and Technology. His research emphasizes the application of systems
thinking and engineering to complex socio-ecological systems. Dr. Burgess also has
interests in decision theory and engineering ethics, with publications and extensive
teaching experience in the latter domain.
Dr. Burgess holds a Ph.D. in Systems and Engineering Management from Texas Tech University.
He also holds a M.A. and B.S. in Philosophy from Texas Tech and Utah State University,
respectively.
Research Expertise
Dr. Burgess's current work focuses on a) strategic water resource management and b) urban planning. He incorporates elements of resilience theory, optimization, economic analysis, and stochastic modeling into his work, all with the goal of promoting long-term viability that is economically feasible.
Teaching
Since joining South Dakota Mines, Dr. Burgess has taught courses on Senior Design, Statistical Quality and Process Control, Engineering Economics, Lean Six Sigma, and Forecasting for Business and Technology. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses.
