Brief Bio
Richard Burgess is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. His research focuses on the application of systems engineering to complex socio-ecological systems with a particular emphasis on strategic water resource planning. He incorporates elements of resilience theory, optimization, economic analysis, and stochastic modeling into his work, all with the goal of promoting water system resilience in a way that is economically sustainable. Richard also has deep interests in decision theory and engineering ethics, with publications and extensive teaching experience in the latter domain.
Richard holds a Ph.D. in Systems and Engineering Management from Texas Tech University. He also holds a M.A. and B.S. in Philosophy from Texas Tech and Utah State University, respectively.
