Brief Bio
After completing my PhD at Southern Methodist University I took a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. In 1988 I moved to following 30 years, including Professor and Department Chair. In 2018 I retired and moved to the South Dakota School of Mines and Industry where I have been involved in research as described above as well as developing policies in the area of Faculty Development.
Research Expertise
Dr. Nielsen's two areas of current research include igneous petrology of MORB, particularly pertaining to the processes active in the upper mantle and lower crust. In addition, he is working on experimental and theoretical trace element partitioning, particularly in areas of database management and interpretation
Teaching
Dr. Nielsen currently does not teach as part of his position at SD Mines. In the past, he has taught 16 different courses that ranged from Geo101 (Intro to Physical Geology to Geo667 (Theoretical Petrology).
