IBL Projects

Explore a few of the projects Innovation-Based Learning (IBL) students are tackling this semester. New challenges proposed by industry and faculty are continually added, and students are encouraged to bring their own innovative ideas to life. The impact extends beyond the classroom: a pilot IBL student team recently established an LLC to advance its innovative medical device.

Your IBL Journey

Innovation-Based Learning can be part of your experience from your first year at South Dakota Mines through graduation. Start by exploring opportunities, then build on those experiences as your skills, interests, and professional goals develop.

Start exploring how your classroom learning connects to real-world challenges. Look for opportunities to get involved in student organizations, introductory research, campus projects, or other hands-on experiences that let you try new things and discover what interests you.

These early experiences can help you build confidence, learn how to work with others, and begin developing the technical and professional skills you'll use throughout your degree.

As you progress through your program, take on opportunities that challenge you to apply and expand your knowledge. Research, industry-sponsored projects, internships, and interdisciplinary experiences can help you work through increasingly complex problems.

Each experience adds to your portfolio and gives you opportunities to develop the communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and technical skills employers value.

Put your experience to work on larger, more complex challenges. Senior design, advanced research, entrepreneurship, internships, and industry projects can help you demonstrate what you can do while working with professionals and applying your skills in authentic settings.

Use these experiences to strengthen your portfolio, build professional connections, and explore the types of work and industries you may want to pursue after graduation.

Take stock of what you've learned and the experiences you've built. Your IBL experiences can provide concrete examples of your technical abilities, problem-solving approach, teamwork, and professional growth.

Use your portfolio and experiences to tell your story to employers, graduate programs, and professional connections—and show how your South Dakota Mines education has prepared you to make an impact.
