Mines Chemical Engineering Students Host 19th Annual Community Dublin Dash

For nearly two decades, South Dakota Mines chemical engineering students have turned St. Patrick’s Day into more than just a celebration of green; they've made it a community tradition with purpose.
The popular Dublin Dash 5K fun run/walk, in its 19th year, returns Saturday, March 7, inviting runners, walkers and families to lace up their shoes and head to Memorial Park. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m., with the race starting at 10 a.m.
Hosted by the student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the Dublin Dash is the group's signature fundraiser, supporting travel expenses and other conference-related expenses. “All the funds from the race are used for the students to travel to regional and national events, compete in ChemE Car (AIChE’s CAMP team) and student-led meetings,” said Emily Myscofski, sophomore chemical engineering major and AIChE Dublin Dash chair. “It’s a fun way for the community to support what we we’re doing while celebrating together.”
The race began in the early 2000s when Patrick Gilcrease, Ph.D., professor in the Karen M. Swindler Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, stepped in as the AIChE advisor and began looking for new fundraising ideas. At the same time, the Black Hills Runners Club was seeking a local St. Patrick’s Day race. Gilcrease, also a club member, volunteered AIChE to host the event and it has been a community tradition since.
Registration is $25 for adults and $20 for children 10 and under or participants with a Mines student ID. Community members may register online or in person the morning of the race.
Participants are encouraged to wear their best St. Patrick’s Day attire.
