Retired four-star U.S. Air Force Gen. Maryanne Miller, who rose to one of the highest levels of military leadership, will share her experience with the community during a special talk at South Dakota Mines at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, in the Nucor Mineral Industries Building, room 246.

Miller’s visit to the university is part of this year's President's Leadership Academy. Founded by former Mines President Jim Rankin, Ph.D., P.E., and supported by alumni Lorin and Mary Brass and the Brass Family Foundation, the academy equips students with the skills, insights and perspectives that define an effective leader.

At one point in her career, Miller was the only female four-star officer serving in the United States military. Her last position before her retirement in October of 2020 was commander, Air Mobility Command, where she was responsible for directing global air mobility operations in support of national objectives.

Miller was commissioned in 1981 as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program at Ohio State University. She is a command pilot with more than 4,800 flying hours in eight different Air Force aircraft.

She spent 39 years serving as an officer and pilot in the U.S. Air Force, but now serves on the board of Bristow, the world’s leading provider of helicopter transportation to energy customers, search and rescue and aircraft support solutions to government and civil organizations, and is vice president of Leaven Kids, a non-profit organization that establishes learning centers in under-resourced neighborhoods to provide after-school tutoring and mentoring.

Since 2013, she has been a volunteer for St. Teresa of Calcutta’s Missionaries of Charity, serving the poorest of the poor around the world.
