Sample Processing Laboratory

Sample Processing Laboratory

This laboratory provides space for the processing of sediment samples, which are broken down; screen-washed to remove mud and silt; and then microscopically examined to reveal tiny fossils. Microfossils are valuable because they can reconstruct past environments and ages more accurately than possible with just fossils of larger animals. This laboratory hosts equipment for the screening and examination of sediments and storing fluid-preserved specimens. Visitors are invited to watch work in progress through a large window into this laboratory.

The James E. Martin Paleontology Research Laboratory is a research component of the SDSM&T Museum of Geology.  It is not open for public tour.
