About the Museum of Geology

The Museum of Geology is located in the heart of the Black Hills, in Rapid City, South Dakota, on the campus of the South Dakota Mines, on the third floor of the O'Harra Building.  (Visit: Museum of Geology | Virtual Tour | Visitor Directions).

  • School Tours: $3.00 per student, teachers and chaperones are free
  • Private Tours: $6 per person, plus a $20.00 fee

Admissions prices are suggested, but not required. Tour fees are required. 

*Tours must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Tours larger than 25 people must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. 

The Museum has been collecting and displaying new specimens since 1885. Come and see our fascinating mounted skeletons of dinosaurs, mammals, marine reptiles, and fish! Dozens of rare fossils from the White River Badlands are arranged in time-specific dioramas. Our mineral displays include the Hall of South Dakota Minerals, meteorites, and a fluorescent mineral room that's sure to fascinate.

Directions

By Car from Airport Route 44 (from the east): From Rapid City Regional Airport, proceed west (right) on Route 44. At the Saint Patrick St. intersection turn left. Travel on Saint Patrick St. to Saint Joseph St. and turn right (west). Follow Saint Joseph St. for 1/2 mile. Turn left at University Loop and right on Technology Court.

I-90 (from I-90 to exit 57): Continue on West Blvd. to Saint Joseph St. Turn left (east) on Saint Joseph St and go 15 blocks. SDSMT will be in the right side of Saint Joseph St.; turn right at University Loop and right on Technology Court.

Route 79 (from the south): Continue North on Route 79, and take downtown exit to Saint Joseph St. Follow Saint Joseph St. for 1/2 mile. Turn left at University Loop and right on Technology Court.

Route 16 (from the south): Continue north on Route 16 into Rapid City making a right turn onto Saint Joseph St., traveling east towards the university 13 blocks. Turn right on University Loop and right on Technology Court.
