Brief Bio

Dr. Mingyuan Chen joined South Dakota Mines in August 2024 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nanoscience and Biomedical Engineering. He earned both his B.S. and M.S. in Physics. During his master’s at Tongji University, his research focused on 2D-materials based electronic and optoelectronic devices. In 2023, he completed his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering at Auburn University, specializing in Nanophotonics and Near-field Optics. Before joining South Dakota Mines, Dr. Chen was a postdoctoral researcher in Stephen Forrest’s OCM group at the University of Michigan, where he worked on organic materials, OLEDs, and Fourier optics. Dr. Chen has published as both first and co-author in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature MaterialsNature NanotechnologyNature CommunicationsNano LettersAdvanced Optical Materials, and Small.
