Dean of Students

We want you to flourish at South Dakota Mines. And we know, sometimes, life gets complicated: unexpected illnesses, family situations, financial strains, and academic stresses.

We’re here to help, with a wealth of resources, services, and programming, or simply an open door. From our Residence Life staff to our Veteran’s Resource Center, we’re committed to creating a healthy, engaging environment for all of our students, inside the classroom and out.

A Message from:

Dean Pat Mahon,
Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students

Mahon, Patricia 200x250The members of the Student Development Division are dedicated to serving students and helping individuals grow and develop while pursuing their educational and career goals in a safe, healthy and inclusive environment.  Please don't hesitate to call on us for assistance and/or mentorship.
This year, with COVID-19, will be particularly challenging but with the Rocker Pledge concepts, we will move forward together.

I came to the South Dakota Mines in the fall of 2000 as the Vice President for Student Development and the Dean of Students. Prior to that I worked in the divisions of student affairs at Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University – Billings) and Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Being a native of Wyoming, it is great to be in this part of the country,

I enjoy meeting students and hearing firsthand your questions, concerns and accomplishments.  Here's looking forward to seeing you around campus, whether it is at events, in the Hardrock Dining Hall, on the Quad, or in my office located in the Surbeck Center (with  physical distancing protocols in place).  You may also phone or e-mail me at any time.

Sincerely, Dean Mahon
