Upperclass Housing: Rocker Square I & Rocker Square II

Upperclass housing (available to students who graduated from high school before January 2019) is available in Rocker Square I and Rocker Square II apartments for the 2020-2021 academic year.  The online housing application for these spaces, available for Spring 2021, is available starting October 15, 2020.  Housing spaces are limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Groups of students should submit applications within 48-hours of each other to ensure they are assigned together.  Learn more about Rocker Square I and Rocker Square II by visiting these web pages. The fee must be paid before housing is assigned (online or at the Student Accounts Office). Available spaces in the apartments typically include:

  • 27 Rocker Square II 4-Bedroom Apartments (singles)
  • 3 Rocker Square II 2-Bedroom Apartments (singles)
  • 26 Rocker Square I 4-Bedroom Apartments (singles)

Current Students Required To Live On Campus

Per South Dakota Board of Regents policy, all students who graduated from high school in 2019 or 2020 are required to live on campus during the 2020-2021 academic year (unless a housing exemption has been applied for and approved).  Current residents who graduated from high school in 2019 are guaranteed housing per the housing selection process for fall in April 14-17 2020 and for Spring 2021.

Spring 2021 Housing Placement Important Dates

  • October 15: Spring 2021 Housing Application is live
  • November 17: Students living on campus for Fall 2020 but not returning for Spring 2021 must notify Katie Wahls by noon 
  • December 10: Housing exemption requests for students required to live on campus for Spring 2021 are due by noon
  • December 10: Students with new housing applications for Spring 2021 will be assigned and notified on a rolling basis as spaces allow between December 10 and January 5. 
  • December 15: Spring 2021 Housing application fee is due

Housing Selection: Important Details for Required Students

  • All applications require a $100 housing application fee that must be submitted by December 15 (either online with credit/debit card or with cash/check in Student Accounts Office). Housing cannot be assigned without payment.
  • Lottery numbers are issued to all students required to live on campus for the 2020-2021 academic year.  These lottery numbers are randomly assigned.
  • All current students required to live on campus for Spring 2021 must submit a housing application before December 10.
  • Students may request to live together on the housing application (as a group).  To be assigned as a group, all students must be listed on all applications.  Most housing is in groups of  4 - we recommend creating a group of 4 for your housing application. 
  • Housing assignments will be assigned using the random lottery numbers assigned.

    Special Accommodations

    In limited circumstances, the University approves students for special housing accommodations based on medical need and/or disability status. If you have special needs that make it necessary to have a specific type of housing, please contact Disability Services for further information.     Housing Exemption Information

    Per SD Board of Regents policy, all students who have graduated from high school in the past two years are required to live in campus housing.  Current students who are required to live on campus next year may apply for an exemption from this policy by December 10, 2020.  In general, housing exemptions are granted only for the following reasons:  living in approved Greek Life housing, living with parents or guardians in the Rapid City area, living with a spouse, or living with dependent children.     Residents Not Returning for the Spring 2021 Semester

    Students not returning for the spring semester must notify Katie Wahls, Interim Director of Residence Life, by Nov. 17 at noon about the status of their housing contract (email  Students who are not returning to housing second semester must vacate housing by noon on Nov. 25.  Rooms must be returned to move-in condition: cleaned, damage-free, and with all University furniture. Mail will automatically be forwarded to the address on file with the University. If another address is desired, complete the online request here.

    • Rocker Square Residents Not Returning
      • Key Return: Return all keys and cards to Residence Life via an "Express Check-Out" envelope (2 keys, 1 card). Envelopes will be provided to all students who are leaving. Extra envelopes can be found at the Surbeck Front Desk. Failure to return all keys/cards will result in improper check-out and re-keying charges.  Envelopes can be returned to the Residence Life Office or in the Residence Life maildrop when the office is closed.
    • Palmerton, Connolly, Placer, or Peterson Residents Not Returning
      • ID Card Deactivation: All residents must visit the Residence Life Office before Nov. 25 at noon to have their ID Cards updated. Failure to have cards updated by Nov. 25 will result in improper check-out charges.
