Returning Student Housing Selection: 2022-2023

Upperclass Housing: Rocker Square I & Rocker Square II

Upperclass housing (available to students who graduated from high school before January 2021) is available in Rocker Square I and Rocker Square II apartments for the 2021-2022 academic year, with additional spaces in traditional halls if available Rocker Square Apartments are full.  The online housing application for these spaces, available for Fall 2022, is available starting March 25, 2022.  As we are required to accommodate all first and second year students, housing spaces are extraordinarily limited for Fall 2022 and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Groups of students should submit applications within 48-hours of each other to ensure they are assigned together.  Learn more about Rocker Square I and  Rocker Square II by visiting these web pages. Housing prices for 2022-2023 are not yet finalized. Current rates are available online here. Typically there is a small percentage increase each year.  All applications require a $100 housing application fee. The fee must be paid before housing is assigned (online or at the Student Accounts Office). Total spaces in the apartments typically include:

  • 27 Rocker Square II 4-Bedroom Apartments (singles)
  • 3 Rocker Square II 2-Bedroom Apartments (singles)
  • 26 Rocker Square I 4-Bedroom Apartments (singles)

Students Required To Live On Campus

Per South Dakota Board of Regents policy, all students who graduated from high school in 2021 or 2022 are required to live on campus during the 2022-2023 academic year (unless a housing exemption has been applied for and approved).  Current residents who graduated from high school in 2021 or 2022 are guaranteed housing per the housing selection process for 2022-2023. Housing Applications for students new to the School of Mines (new students, transfer students, etc.) that are submitted before May 1, 2022 will be in the first round of placements with assignments sent to student email accounts in June 2022.

Fall 2022 Housing Placement Important Dates

  • March 1: Lottery Numbers Emailed to Eligible Students (students required to live on campus)
  • March 21-24: Housing Application Submission Period for students required to live on campus (submissions online via the online housing application
  • March 25: Housing Application Open to Upperclass students for Rocker Square I and Rocker Square II

Housing Selection: Important Details for Required Students

    • All current students required to live on campus for Fall 2022 must submit a housing application between March 21-24.
    • Lottery numbers are issued to all students required to live on campus for the 2022-2023 academic year.  These lottery numbers are randomly assigned.
    • All applications require a $100 housing application fee that must be submitted by March 24 at 4:00pm (either online with credit/debit card or with cash/check in Student Accounts Office). If you miss the deadline, your application will remain live but "incomplete" for 30 days, with multiple reminder emails, before being deactivating. Housing cannot be assigned without payment.
    • Any student who does not pay the housing application fee prior to the deadline and still has an "incomplete" application during placements will forfeit their lottery ranking and will not be placed when completing housing assignments. Once paid and processed by the Student Accounts Office, they will be eligible for housing placement within the remaining openings in campus housing.
    • Students may request to live together on the housing application (as a group).  To be assigned as a group, all students must be listed on all applications and ALL parties must have paid the fee. Any members of the group with unpaid fees will not be placed with their group as their application is "incomplete" at the time.  Most housing is in groups of  2 to 4 - we recommend creating a group of 4 for your housing application.
    • Housing assignments will be assigned using the random lottery numbers assigned. Assignments are made starting with the lowest lottery numbers (1, 2, 3, ...426).  For a group, assignments will be based on the lowest lottery number within the group.

    Housing Exemption Information

Per SD Board of Regents policy, all students who have graduated from high school in the past two years are required to live in campus housing.  Current students who are required to live on campus next year may apply for an exemption from this policy by March 25, 2021.  In general, housing exemptions are granted only for the following reasons:  living in approved Greek Life housing, living with parents or guardians in the Rapid City area, living with a spouse, or living with dependent children.
